College savings often refers to an investment program in which parents plan ahead to start putting away money for their children’s higher education expenses. A common type of college savings plan is a 529 plan.

A 529 plan is a savings plan designed to help families set aside these funds for future college costs. The term 529 plan is derived from the portion of the Internal Revenue Code which concerns these education plans, "Section 529".
